April Fools Day History

Today is the day where practical jokes and pranks are common. The jokes range from ringing doorbells and hiding to writing shocking Facebook statuses to fake phone calls.  April Fools day originated some time before the 16th century in France. Prior to 1582 the New Year was always celebrated over 8 days beginning on March 25th with the big party on April 1st. However when the Gregorian calendar was introduced New Years was moved to Jan. 1st.  Well news didn’t travel as fast as it does today and the folks that still celebrated New Years on April 1st were thought of as “backward” or “Fools” by the more informed folks.

Over time this mockery of the “Fools” evolved into a tradition of prank-playing that eventually made its way across the English Channel and the rest is history as they say.
