Fathers Day
Here at AJM Insurance we would like to give you a heads up that Fathers Day is only a couple days away! The third Sunday of June has been known as Fathers Day ever since it became an official observed U.S. holiday decreed by law, which was in 1972.
Here is some information on the history of Fathers Day and just how it originated:
- Fathers Day itself was not actually created by a man, which many people originally thought. It was first thought of by a Ms. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington in 1909.
- It is said that Ms. Dodd came up with the idea of having a Fathers Day while sitting listening to a sermon on Mothers Day, which at that time was about to be established as a holiday.
- Sonora Smart Dodd was raised with no mother, due to the mothers death while giving childbirth. Sonora and five other siblings were raised by their father William Jackson Smart, who was a Civil War veteran.
- “The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd’s Father” ("Encyclopaedia Britannica").
- “In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge gave his support to the observance, and in 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson officially proclaimed it a national holiday” ("History.com").
Interesting Little Facts:
- Many people on Fathers Day wear a red or white rose to signify if their father is living or deceased.
- Red means that their father is living.
- White means that they have passed away.
- It is speculated that the word “father” originated from the 15th century up until now, due to children’s ability to say sounds such as da-da.
